The bull-headed Minotaur, illegitimate son of Minos, the King of Crete, lived in isolation within the labyrinth, a superbly constructed meandering maze that proved, for all who entered, impossible to traverse. Every nine years, seven young men and seven young women from Athens arrived in Knossos and were sacrificed to the Minotaur. Theseus, son of the King of Athens, set sail for the Minoan palace/city intent on killing the beast and putting an end to the Cretan king’s lamentable blood tax. With the help of Ariadne, daughter of Minos, and her ball of thread, Theseus killed the Minotaur and, tracing the filament back to where he had secured it at the entrance, emerged triumphant from the labyrinth
